TWO MORE TROPHIES FOR LERIDA ESTATE SHIRAZ VIOGNIER

2014 Lerida Estate Shiraz ViognierCanberra District wines took out 2 of the 4 major trophies at the 24th Annual NSW Small Winemakers Show at Forbes. Lerida Estate from Lake George took out the Trophy for the Best 2013/2014 Shiraz as well as the Best Red Wine of the Show for its 2014 Shiraz Viognier, and McKellar Ridge Wines from Murrumbateman took out the Trophy for the Best Riesling as well as the Best Boutique White Wine of the Show for its 2015 Riesling.

Combined with neighbouring Hilltops, the 'local' wine industry took out the highest total for any NSW district (8 trophies) clearly demonstrating the exceptional quality of cool-grown, southern tablelands wine grapes.

Lerida Estate's trophies follow 2 significant trophies (one of these an international one) awarded to its previous vintage of this style of wine - the 2013 Lerida Estate Shiraz Viognier.

Owner of Lerida Estate Jim Lumbers said today that "The award for a 2014 wine was a miracle. All winemakers in South-eastern Australia remember the 2014 vintage with horror, particularly for the late-maturing reds like Shiraz. We watched as the steady rain in March trashed what had looked like a magnificent crop. And then spent hours on the sorting table trying to retrieve some clean bunches.".

According to Jim "It was heart-breaking. We rescued only enough fruit to for 40 dozen bottles". He added "With such a small batch of wine, there are not many wine shows you can enter so it is wonderful that the NSW Small Winemakers Show gives us this opportunity to get the judgement of independent, skilled industry experts on our efforts. But watch out for the 2015! A warm, dry summer created perfect conditions, giving a large crop of intensely flavoured fruit."

According to Anne Caine, co-owner of Lerida Estate, 'It is now clear that fruit grown on the slopes of the Cullerin Range overlooking Lake George can make not only make great Pinot Noir (Lerida Estate's predominant variety) - but in warmer years, also great Shiraz. It is also a tribute to the exceptional winemaking skills of Lerida Estate winemaker Malcolm Burdett that he was able to produce such a magnificent wine in such difficult circumstances'.

Lerida Estate has been making wines since 2002 and in that time its wines have been awarded 14 Trophies and over 530 medals.

Lerida Estate Wins Top Award at National Wine Show

2013-lerida-estate-lake-george-shiraz-viognier.jpgLerida Estate has helped the Canberra District enhance its already stellar reputation by winning the 2014 National Wine Show’s Chair of Judges Award for its 2013 Lake George Shiraz Viognier.

The National Wine Show is a unique “show of shows’ permitting only entries from wines already awarded Gold and Silver medals from major wine shows. The Chair of Judges Award is a discretionary award and is made in respect of a wine that the Chair of Judges – this year Jim Chatto - considers to be exceptional

Small, but producing wines of exceptional quality, the Canberra District is home to 12 James Halliday 5- star wineries - at 40% of the wine producers - a higher proportion than any other wine region in NSW.

Malcolm Burdett, Lerida Estate’s winemaker, has shaped a reputation within the industry as one of the most accomplished Shiraz makers in the country. His decision to link his future to Lerida Estate in 2005 was influenced by his recognition of the potential of the high, cool Lake George site.

Following the award presentation, owner Jim Lumbers said “Thankfully 2013, like 2008 and 2009, was slightly warmer than average at Lake George, and, proving the truth of the French saying, ‘Greatness is found on the boundary of the possible’, allowed us to make an exceptional wine.”.

Jim thanked show judges who over the years have encouraged the evolution of cool-climate wine styles like Shiraz Viognier from the Canberra District.  An enthusiastic supporter of the show system as a way to encourage producers to compare and develop their production techniques, he said:

“Were it not for the encouragement offered by its success in shows, it is possible that we would have given up on Shiraz at Lake George given the sometimes very cool, difficult vintages, on top of the usual hazards of late summer rain and hail.”

The 2013 Lerida Estate Shiraz Viognier will be released in mid-2015.

2013 'Cullerin' Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: ‘Cullerin’ is the name of the range of slopes on which the Lerida Estate vineyard is planted. Lerida Estate makes 3 Pinot Noirs – the ‘Josephine’ our ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir, the ‘Cullerin’ the next Pinot Noir in the range, and the ‘Lake George’ Pinot Noir, our ‘entry level’ Pinot Noir.

The wine for the ‘Cullerin’ pinot Noir selected for a balance between a fruit driven style, and more texture and weight. The aromas are of this wine are stewed plums, rhubarb and beetroot, with spicy, gamey and savoury notes and a hint of vanilla from 10% new oak barrels. The palate is rich and textured with a long fine grain tannin finish.

Food Matches: This wine matches well with rabbit, duck, game, most savoury truffles, mushrooms, spring lamb and oily fish. Try also with a lightly spiced white fish curry.

Cellaring: 7 - 8 years

2010 Shiraz

A classic cool climate Shiraz from the hills surrounding Canberra, which offers cool brambleberry and spice aromas with a surprisingly generous palate. The flavours are complex and refined, berries and a little pepper, with a long, fine tannin finish. With age, the wine will become progressively richer, revealing warmer, more complex flavours, riper berries and a little liquorice. Drink now, but definitely worth cellaring 4-6 years.

2008 Josephine Pinot Noir

The Canberra District is not well known for Pinot Noir, as only a relatively small number  of the wineries (compared to Shiraz)   produce pinot  noirs .  Generally the best Pinot Noir producers come from the Lake George/ Bungendore/Wamboin sub-region which is higher and cooler than the rest of the wine region  - about 3 degrees cooler than Murrumbateman.

Wine experts who have tastied this wine make comments like ‘ This is the best Pinot Noir to come from the Canberra District for a number of years’.

This wine is our top Pinot Noir from the 2008 Vintage. It contains all the top barrels from 2008.

LGB - Lake George Blend

The Lake George Blend is a bit naughty, but also very nice. It is crafted to an ancient French recipe used in cooler years when the classic Bordeaux varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, failed to ripen fully. In a practice banned under the French Appellation Controllée rules, winemakers would source warm southern Shiraz and even a little white Viognier to flesh out their tight tannic wine. Because 2010 was a cool year in the Canberra District, we made this wine (perfectly legally!) using our 2010 Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz, and little Viognier to lift the fruit.

The wine is very light in style, but with a luscious, almost cheeky fruitiness with red berries, plums and the elegant long Merlot tannin.

Enjoy it now and for the next 3-5 years.
