Tasting notes

A note from Jim Lumbers on this wine:

"We have always been proud of our oak-fermented Chardonnay, and its popularity is such that the last two releases have sold out in just 3 months.  But I have always thought that we could do a little bit better.  I wanted to get a bit more lift to the fruit and at the same time achieve the elusive “struck flint” character found  in great Burgundy.

This year, with the 2009, I think that we have done it.  On the advice of Australia’s top wine scientists, we changed our bottling line to blanket the wine in carbon dioxide and completely exclude oxygen. It worked. Already, this very young wine is showing brilliantly.  Buy a dozen while it lasts, try one bottle and then put the rest away for at least 18 months.  It should be still improving in 4 years."

This wine is made with fruit grown at our vineyard at Lake George. 

It is 100% barrel fermented in French oak barriques (15% new), and 20% with wild yeast.  During 11 months maturation, the barrels were lees stirred every 2 weeks. 

It is a light straw colour with aromas of mango, citrus, passionfruit, white peach, nectarine and vanilla with nutty/toasty overtones.  A smooth, rich palate with a long crisp acid but soft oak finish.  Serve lightly chilled.
